Preparation:
Before you audition, you're asked to select one of six monologues (select one character/part of most interest to you) taken from the two scripts. The monologues will be emailed to you once you sign up. Memorization is appreciated, but not mandatory. You'll also do cold readings from the scripts.
This production features an all-female cast of 6 (three for each one-act). For characters Chekhov wrote as men, gender presentation is flexible and will be shaped by each actor with the director. Some costumes may include beards or other facial hair. Playing ages are about 20 to 50.
All KCP shows use open casting, and no roles are pre-cast. We warmly welcome women of every background, ethnicity, identity, body type and ability. KCP is an all-volunteer company (unpaid, non-Equity).

Audition for the Kentlands Community Players’ January 2027 production of From Chekhov, With Love
Directed by Noel Schoonover, and produced by Meredith Fogle, From Chekhov, With Love features two of Anton Chekhov’s funniest one-act farces: The Proposal and The Bear. Expect quarrels over a meadow and two hunting dogs, a nervous suitor with heart palpitations, a widow who has sworn off life, a creditor who will not take no for an answer, a duel that turns into a romance, and breaking of the fourth wall in service of the comedy.
THE CHARACTERS
THE PROPOSAL: Natalya Stepanovna. Chubukov's daughter, mid-twenties. Sharp, proud and quick to argue. Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov. A neighboring landowner who has finally worked up the nerve to propose. Earnest, suspicious and a hypochondriac whose palpitations, numb foot and twitching eyebrows flare up with every quarrel. Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov. Natalya's parent and landowner. Warm and welcoming until someone crosses the family, then loud enough to shake the house. Delights in a good fight.
THE BEAR: Elena Ivanovna Popova. A young landowning widow who has vowed to mourn her late husband forever, and to make sure everyone knows it. Dramatic, stubborn and far more alive than she will admit. Grigory Stepanovitch Smirnov. A blustering, middle-aged landowner who arrives to collect a debt and refuses to leave without it. Luka. Popova's elderly, devoted and long-suffering servant. Dry, practical and desperate to get the household back to living.
REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES
Rehearsals quickly begin the following week, Tuesday, November 17, and run Tuesday through Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, depending on conflicts. There will be no rehearsals during the holidays (dates to be announced). Actors must provide their schedule conflicts and attend every rehearsal they are called for. Tech week begins Sunday, January 3, 2027. All actors are required for load-in and all of tech week. Performances: Friday-Sunday January 15-31, 2027 at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
