Kentlands Community Foundation
Arts & Culture
KCF supports vibrant arts programming that brings world-class music, theater, film, and visual arts into everyday community life. Through performances, screenings, and exhibitions, these programs make the arts accessible, inspiring, and central to life in the Kentlands.
Gaithersburg Artist Collective / Artist on Market (GAC/AOM)
Bringing Local Art to Life in the Heart of Kentlands
The Gaithersburg Art Collective (GAC) had a very successful and eventful 2025. On January 4, 2025, we opened the doors to our new gallery at 305 Main Street, in the heart of Kentlands. We planned, prepared, moved, and set up a gallery for the seventh time, and have not slowed down since.
This space has been particularly meaningful, as it is the first time we have had a fully leased location. We are enormously grateful for the support that enabled us to lease this space. Support came from our tireless members, the KCF, the community, and the Placemaking Grant that helped ease the transition from a series of pop-up galleries, to a steady hub of community arts activity.
Our members and visitors are delighted that we entered 2025 in a “home of our own” and we quickly put in place plans to take full advantage of the stability to host exhibits, events, and new products. After previously transforming six different pop-up locations into Artists on Market (AOM), our beautiful storefront gallery, we are thrilled to have regular storefront hours, and develop long term planning for our activities. We made the space our own by building in storage, displays, and other improvements.
With our new found stability, our education team was able to plan and carry out 16 different classes where participants learned about topics including painting, felting, mixed media, polymer clay, cyanotype, alcohol ink, wire weaving, and much more. Additionally, we began offering new take-home project kits for sale. By the end of 2025, we had developed, assembled, and sold five different series of project kits, each with materials, supplies, and instructions, enabling our customers to explore their own creativity at home.
The Gaithersburg Artist Collective also held five separate exhibits throughout 2025. Each one involved every member's participation to inventory, curate, hang, and display approximately 1500 handmade items.
-
GAC’s charitable commitments remained a central part of its mission in 2025:
Ongoing donations to the National MS Society from the sale of select merchandise
Our annual American Heart Association fundraiser offering pins, magnets, and other small gift items where our artists donate 100% of proceeds
Community-wide Food Drive benefiting Manna Food Center
Community-wide Winter Sock Drive benefiting Stepping Stones Shelter
Served as a book drop-off site for the Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation (GPARC) Little Free Library program
Free Holiday Card Making series with cards made and donated to Cards For Hospitalized Kids
Our artist members volunteered over 5780 hours in 2025 bringing art to the community. These hours were spent preparing and making improvements to the gallery space, supporting the gallery’s activities, and staffing the gallery. We were able to set a schedule of being open to the public six days a week, all year long. We continue to grow our customer base, mailing list, and our social media following as well.
-
Hosted five free Meet the Artists Receptions, which were very well attended
April through December, Collective members set up displays and sold additional work on Saturdays in coordination with the Gaithersburg Main Street Farmers Market, just outside our front door.
Hosted a pop-up Holiday Art Market at The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center, an assisted living facility in Gaithersburg
Hosted 15 free Artist Demonstrations where our members shared their skills in painting, fiber, paper arts, wire weaving, wet felting, flower arranging, collage, watercolor, and more, as well as one free book talk
Free children’s activities during Oktoberfest
Free children’s Kids Corner Activities every Saturday during the Farmer's Market
-
We are continuing to grow and expand our Community Engagement activities. We are offering more and further reaching classes, activities, and events, and both free and paid learning experiences. We are working to grow our membership so that more small businesses are supported. Having been in this location for one year now, our customer base will continue to build now that our location is stable.
This community has shown a deep appreciation for our presence in Kentlands. We are working every day to be a community destination for the arts and a welcoming space where customers can learn and connect with art while directly supporting nearly 30 small-business-owner artists who provide a unique and ever-evolving selection of art, gifts, and decor. Our artist members, customers, and supporters continue to help us grow each year, and support our mission of supporting worthy causes and enriching the community through art.
Kentlands Community Players (KCP)
Live Theater That Inspires, Connects, and Entertains
In 2025, Kentlands Community Players (KCP) completed its fifth season, furthering its commitment to accessible, community-based performing arts. In partnership with Gaithersburg’s Theatre Arts Partnership Program (TAPP), KCP produced The Lion in Winter and brought its one-act play, A Close Inncounter, to the Maryland Community Theatre Festival.
KCP continued its contribution to the regional theater ecosystem by serving as adjudicators for the Washington Area Theatre Community Honors (WATCH), helping evaluate community theatre productions across the DMV.
-
Looking ahead, KCP will present Outward Bound at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn in 2026 and has submitted for additional productions in partnership with TAPP. The group remains dedicated to enhancing cultural life in the Kentlands | Lakelands community and fostering a welcoming environment where live theatre can be enjoyed by all.
Musica Viva Kentlands (MVK)
Bringing the Beauty of Classical Music to the Community
Now entering its ninth year, Musica Viva Kentlands (MVK) is a classical music concert series dedicated to making exceptional live performances accessible to the greater Kentlands | Lakelands community. The program showcases professional musicians in thoughtfully curated events designed to inspire a deeper appreciation for classical music among diverse audiences.
In 2025, MVK presented three performances. The first spring event was a sold-out indoor fundraiser featuring gifted vocalists from The Catholic University of America performing selections from La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini. The second event was a jazz concert featuring The UpBeets. The UpBeets presented beloved jazz standards, introduced fresh takes on modern favorites, and even included a few classical crossover pieces reimagined in jazz style. While the presentation of a jazz program is a departure for Musica Viva, this change allowed for a broader reach within the community. MVK remains committed to its tradition of free, outdoor programming, and these special concerts provided an opportunity to raise critical funds, introduce new audiences to MVK’s work, and spotlight the next generation of artistic talent.
The traditional free, outdoor concert was held in September on the grounds of the Kentlands Clubhouse. More than 40 professional musicians participated, offering a dynamic program of classical works carefully selected to appeal to both seasoned audiences and new listeners. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the program was highlighted by a performance of The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky–a much-loved piece delivered with verve and energy by the full orchestra under the direction of Maestro Simeone Tartaglione. Special highlights included violin solo performances by internationally renowned Alessandra Cuffaro and world champion whistler, Chris Ullman. To round out the experience, the program included a lighthearted and interactive piece that invited audience members to participate—bringing joy, laughter, and a deeper sense of connection to the music. This performance continued the tradition of bringing high-caliber, accessible performances to the heart of the community and to a large online audience.
Kentlands Film Society (KFS)
Independent Films with Universal Themes
Since its founding in 2006 as a program of the KCF, the Kentlands Film Society (KFS) has remained dedicated to bringing high-quality, independent cinema to residents of the greater Kentlands/Lakelands community. Over the past 19 years, the society has showcased more than 90 films to a collective audience of more than 6,800 attendees.
The film selections are curated by the KFS Programming Committee comprised of committed community volunteers. Throughout 2024 and early 2025, committee members previewed dozens of films in preparation for the October to May 2025-2026 season. The selection process emphasizes socially relevant and thought-provoking topics with universal themes and uplifting conclusions. Each season typically includes a mix of dramas, documentaries, and comedies, with all films presented with English subtitles. Most of the subscriptions are purchased online through the KCF website, streamlining access for audiences and expanding outreach efforts.
-
KFS is currently preparing its 20th season, scheduled to run from October 2026 through May 2027, continuing its mission to bring compelling cinematic experiences to the local community.
Community Engagement
From neighborhood-wide festivals to youth-led service projects, our community engagement initiatives strengthen social bonds and foster a shared sense of purpose. These programs create spaces where residents come together, give back, and celebrate the spirit of Kentlands.

Kentlands Under the Lights (KUL)
Celebrating Summer with Music, Connection, and Community Energy
Kentlands Under the Lights was named the 2025 Reader’s Choice winner for Best Cultural Event by Montgomery Magazine. This was right on the heals of earning a finalist position in Bethesda Magazine’s Annual Festival Awards in 2024. These recognitions make us proud of what Kentlands Under the Lights has become, and they are a real testament the strong community support for and response to Kentlands Under the Lights.
As Kentlands Under the Lights enters its second decade, it has become a mainstay of the Kentlands story, and is the highlight of summer in our special hamlet. The recently expanded footprint allows community members to enjoy a special summer night each in their own way – dance, soft acoustic, dining, or fun and games with the little ones.
-
Kentlands Under the Lights 2026 — set for June 20—will again offer something special for all tastes and ages, and always the Kentlands Under the Lights signature opportunity to linger and connect with neighbors and friends, old and new. We are grateful for the strong local partnerships that contribute to the event’s ongoing success, including more than 50 participating vendors and sponsors, as well as valued collaboration with the City of Gaithersburg and longtime supporter Kimco Realty.
KidServe
Youth-Led Service, Creativity, and Compassion in Action
In 2025 KidServe sought to build and strengthen partnerships with neighborhood service groups, local youth, and local non-profits. KidServe dedicated our year of events in 2025 to the beloved Elaine Brady, mother of co-founder Sherry Dunda. Elaine was called to her heavenly home in 2024 and left behind a legacy of giving that lives on brightly. Elaine personified service to others, and her entire life was built around helping the homeless, the poor, the cold, and the lonely. We were honored to acknowledge Elaine at all of our 2025 events.
-
We gathered with a small group of neighbors to honor MLK Day: we assembled 40 snack bags filled with juice, granola bars, chips, rice krispie treats, and socks for Rainbow Place women’s shelter. We also made cookies for our local fire department. This gathering was a reminder that service is, at its essence, a simple act of kindness.
-
A local child care center, the Kiddie Academy of Gaithersburg, reached out to us so we visited a class to read a story and do a craft. We taught 30 pre-K students about how each of us has something we can give to serve others. We read a book about giving, acted out ways we help others, colored pictures for people who are away from their families, and made hearts for someone we love. We are never too young or too old to give to others!
We also partnered with local non-profit For Love and Buttercup to do a book drive for pediatric cancer patients. We gathered with 30 volunteers to make bookmarks to donate with the books. We loved that our event brought out so many different groups from the community: our neighbors, a church group, a quilters group, a Girl Scout troop, Brownies, and families.
Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we collected 158 books and 30 handmade pillowcases for pediatric cancer patients. Together, we made 170 bookmarks.
Special thanks to the Nimble Quilters group for the beautiful pillowcases!
-
We returned to the ESOL kids at Seneca Creek to do our annual St. Patrick’s Day party. Along with 2 student volunteers from the neighborhood, we helped about 30 kids decorate shamrock cookies, play games, make a fruit-loop & marshmallow rainbow treat, and play some games with prizes.
After being approached by an MCPS teacher’s aide, we ran an art class for about 18 special needs students aged K-1st grade. The students learned about Vincent
Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The kids sang songs, talked about colors & shapes, and made their own Starry Night masterpieces. We then marched around the church in a line of joy to give away the art which brought smiles to everyone’s faces—both givers and recipients. -
We returned to Sunrise Senior Center in Montgomery Village with a group of about 18 college, high school, middle school, elementary, and preschool students. We spent quality time with our elderly neighbors doing crafts, puzzles, card games, making tissue paper flowers, and playing fan-favorite bingo! This intergenerational event is always popular with our families.
-
To encourage young artists to submit drawings for the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K fun run t-shirt design contest, we partnered with the KCF to host a drawing day where artists aged 11 and under + siblings could create a masterpiece for submission. We provided all the supplies.
-
Our popular holiday giving event returned this year. We partnered with the Community Hope Center & Catholic Charities at Seneca Creek Community Church to provide gifts for 62 local kids. This gift-wrapping event brought out a diverse community of parents, students, neighbors, and friends. Lots of gift donors were extremely generous—purchasing multiple gifts—and we had a good number of anonymous donors as well. Later in December, we were honored to participate in the giving out of the beautifully packaged gifts at the Hope Center, and we loved seeing the smiling moms who knew they could cross one thing off their holiday list! We love this event because we purchase specific gifts for a specific child.
-
We hosted a holiday “Paint and Sip” event just for fun! We served light refreshments and painted festive holiday signs. Additionally, we used this event to collect donations of coloring books, activity books, puzzles, etc. for a neighborhood student doing a drive for hospitalized kids as part of Kiddo Kindness.
We assisted the high school students of Our Lady of Good Counsel’s Swim & Dive team to donate and assemble 200 breakfasts for the Men’s Shelter in Rockville. The students collected all the necessary food items, created an assembly line, packaged the food items, and delivered them to the shelter.
-
KidServe will continue to build on its mission of youth-led community service in 2026, developing new partnerships, engaging young volunteers, and designing projects that foster compassion, creativity, and civic engagement.
Kentlands Holiday Tree & Menorah Lighting
Celebrating the Season at Kentlands Market Square
In December 2025, the Kentlands Community Foundation partnered with KIMCO to present the annual Tree and Menorah Lighting at Kentlands Market Square. The celebration welcomed approximately 1,000 attendees for a festive evening of music, lights, blessings, family friendly activities, and shared traditions.
The event featured the official Tree and Menorah Lighting, with the Tree Lighting led by Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman. Pastor Blake Collins of Darnestown Presbyterian offered a seasonal blessing, and Rabbi David Helfand of Shaare Torah offered the Chanukah blessing during the Menorah Lighting.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed a performance by the Gaithersburg Chorus, DJ hosted holiday music, and carolers strolling through the square. Santa made his grand arrival on a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Station 31 fire truck before greeting families and taking photos.
Families also enjoyed glowing holiday lights, crafts, dreidels, raffles, seasonal treats, community partner activities, and photo opportunities throughout the square. This beloved event brought together neighbors, families, and local organizations to celebrate the start of the holiday season with joy, community spirit, and connection.
-
The Tree and Menorah Lighting will return in December 5 2026, continuing as one of the Foundation’s signature community traditions. KCF looks forward to building on the success of the 2025 celebration and continuing to partner with KIMCO and community organizations to create a welcoming and festive holiday gathering for all.
New Urbanism, Environment & Sustainability
As a model New Urbanist community, Kentlands continues to champion walkability, sustainability, and thoughtful urban design. These programs reflect the Foundation’s commitment to preserving the environment, promoting civic dialogue, and honoring Kentlands' unique planning legacy.
New Urbanism
Showcasing Kentlands as a Living Model of Walkable, Sustainable Design
The New Urbanism Committee is dedicated to advancing the principles of New Urbanist design and fostering a deeper understanding of how thoughtful planning can shape sustainable, connected communities. In 2025, the committee launched several initiatives aimed at education, engagement, and placemaking.
Mobile App Development
One of the committee’s most significant efforts in 2025 was the development of several GPS-based, self-guided tours which are designed to showcase Kentlands as a living example of New Urbanism. These tours will guide residents and visitors through themed, informative walks, featuring immersive audio and visual content contributed by local volunteers. These contributions—from writers, narrators, and photographers—bring the story of Kentlands to life while fostering a sense of community ownership and pride. Once launched, these tours will serve as both an educational tool and a platform for future engagement.
-
In May 2025, the committee participated in Metropolitan Washington’s Bike to Work Day by co-hosting pit stops in both Kentlands and Old Towne Gaithersburg. The event promoted sustainable transportation and offered an opportunity to engage directly with residents and commuters. The event supported the committee’s broader mission of encouraging walkability, active living, and greater appreciation for the design principles that make Kentlands a vibrant, livable community.
-
During Oktoberfest 2025, the committee hosted a pop-up New Urbanism Museum in the Kentlands Carriage House, welcoming approximately 800 visitors. The event featured exhibits and activities for all ages, a short theater projection, and guest commentary from local experts, including Carson Hessler (DPZ CoDesign). This successful exhibit added a unique educational layer to the festival, deepening public awareness of Kentlands’ design principles.
-
Looking ahead, the New Urbanism Committee plans to:
Finalize and launch the mobile app version of the walking tours, complete with accessible navigation and audio/visual content.
Explore a Home & Garden Tour to celebrate Kentlands’ unique architecture and public spaces.
Host a series of community engagement events related to the City's Build 2040 master plan amendments.
Continue leading live walking tours, co-hosting pitstops at Bike to Work Day 2026, and explore creating new children's programming in conjunction with local Scout troops.
Participate in celebrating the history and contributions of African American community members on Juneteenth at the newly restored Quince Orchard Colored School.
Expand partnerships with local schools, businesses, and other community groups to broaden engagement and build momentum.
Grounded in the principles of human-scale design, sustainability, and civic life, the committee remains committed to keeping Kentlands and Lakelands at the forefront of New Urbanist innovation and education.
Go Green Group
Promoting Sustainability Through Action, Education, and Community Partnerships
Go Green Group, the KCF’s environment-focused initiative, continued its mission in 2025 to explore and promote sustainable practices through learning, hands-on activities, and community collaboration. The group meets bimonthly and remains a vital voice for environmental stewardship in the neighborhood.
Signature community activities organized by the group include the Annual Earth Day Cleanup, now approaching its 19th year, and the Annual Daffodil Planting. These events engage local volunteers in enhancing and preserving Kentlands’ natural spaces.
The Go Green Group worked with the Kentlands Green Team to apply for and secure a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust for $41,000 to plant an educational native plant and storm water management garden on Kentlands HOA property. The future educational garden will be planted next to the Carriage House in late spring and early summer 2026. This garden will feature perennial native plants, educational signage, and a long-term maintenance plan. It aims to reduce runoff and increase community awareness about the importance of pollinators, birds, and native ecosystems. This project will also include a garden opening event in June and quarterly garden speakers to educate the community at large on how to plant similar native plants at home.
The grant was awarded with the support of various organizations, including the Kentlands Community Foundation, GPARC Gaithersburg, City of Gaithersburg’s Parks and Recreation Department, The Muddy Branch Alliance (non-profit local watershed group) Kentlands Garden Club, Kentlands Citizens Assembly.
The Go Green Group has also been instrumental in advocating for pesticide-free landscaping, researching and promoting EV Chargers in the neighborhood, and for launching the neighborhood compost program.
Community is built not just through shared spaces, but through shared interests. These neighborhood groups provide opportunities for residents to connect through music, games, photography, and more, creating lasting friendships and deepening the sense of belonging that defines Kentlands life.

Kentlands Wine Club
Sipping, Sharing, and Strengthening Community
2025 was a great vintage for the Kentlands Wine Club! The highlight of the Wine Club continues to be the excellent educational/viticultural programming provided to our members. We popped the cork by opening the year at the Ransone residence learning aromas that enhance the wine experience. Alyssa Wolf of Red Wolf Imports presented wines of Portugal. At various dates during the year, we explored wines of the Rhone Valley, a focused session on the Cab Franc grape, fortified wines, and a dedicated session on white wine varietals.
The Wine Club is not entirely educational: we also had fun with wine themes: “Open That Bottle Night;” “March Madness: Old World vs New World;” and “Wines to Take to the Beach.”
New in 2025: field trips! In May, the Wine Club took a bus trip to Loew Vineyard (Mt. Airy) and 61 Vineyard (Damascus). We followed that with a field trip to Loudoun County in November by visiting Breaux (Purcellville) and 8 Chains North (Waterford).
We are also pleased to report that 2025 was the highest membership on record since the club’s inception in 2018…86 members! We topped off the year at the Palka residence for a holiday themed wine event.
Shout out to our dedicated planning committee: Helene and Andy Griffith, Cara and Rob Garretson, Felicia and Patrick Kaminker, and Lynn and Steve Longley. Special thanks as well to members who welcomed the entire club to their homes: Sue and Joe Palka, and Kristen and Bart Ransone.

-
In 2026, the Kentlands Wine Club will continue its monthly gatherings, deepen its educational offerings, and expand its impact through social connection and community giving.
Kentlands Bridge Club
Weekly Play, Lifelong Connections
The Kentlands Bridge Club continued its weekly gatherings in 2025, meeting every Wednesday afternoon at the Carriage House. This well-loved community group experienced steady growth throughout the year, reaching a roster of 27 regular players. Many new members joined through word-of-mouth, community recommendations, and outreach via KCF’s media.
Due to space limitations, weekly play is capped at 20 participants, though a list of substitute players ensures that all interested members have the opportunity to take part. The club remains a welcoming and lively gathering point for residents who enjoy friendly competition, strategy, and connection through the timeless game of bridge.
-
The Kentlands Bridge Club will continue into 2026 with its regular weekly games and remains open to new players seeking community, camaraderie, and classic card play.
Kentlands Music Jams (KMJ)
Building Community Through the Joy of Making Music
Making music as a community is important to us and the Kentlands Community Foundation. The Kentlands Music Jams have a history of inspiring neighborhood hobby musicians to get together to play the kind of music that inspires us. This includes genres such as rock and blues and jazz.
During 2025 we got together in the Kentlands Carriage House on a close to monthly basis to play together. The Kentlands Jazz Jam meets on the third Friday of most months under the direction of jazz aficionado and pianist extraordinaire Daniel Marks, and the Kentlands Rock and Blues Social Club met the second Saturday of each month. Due to logistical issues for a few of the key members, the Kentlands Rock and Blues Social Club is currently on hiatus until further notice.
Under the Music Jam umbrella, the Kentlands Acoustic Jam will be starting up in 2026 and is looking at exploring our community's interest in making acoustic music, Americana/folk music, and songwriting. Recall that the Acoustic Jam was the first music related component of the Kentlands Community Foundation, having kicked off in 2012. The Kentlands Music Jams embody the spirit and beauty of making good music together.
-
Both the Jazz Jam and Acoustic Jam groups will hold monthly jam sessions in 2026, with opportunities for more public performances and new collaborations with local musicians and events.
Kentlands Photography Society
Capturing Community Through the Lens of Art & Innovation
The Kentlands Photography Society led by Hamid Nazari and Markham Luke continues to flourish as a combination of virtual interactions and in person photographic sessions attended by interested, photographically-minded members of the Kentlands community.
During 2025 we were inspired by community scenes from Kentlands community get togethers, nature scenes around the Kentlands lakes, and people/street photography around the Kentlands Marketplace. We also dabbled in photographing various astro phenomenon and continued to develop shared interests in drone photography and use of artificial intelligence to enhance our creative capabilities.
If your interest is in capturing visual images using film or digital cameras, recording community images for posterity and as a neighborhood legacy activity, or you want to talk equipment, come to one of our meetings - contact Hamid or Markham or look at our Facebook events calendar.
-
In 2026, the Kentlands Photography Society will continue its visual storytelling journey, integrating new technology and community-driven projects to deepen its impact and engagement.

Steve and Lynn Longley conceived of the Kentlands Wine Club back in 2018 as a way to build community among an underserved demographic in the Kentlands and Lakelands. Back in the day, there were plenty of programs for kids; the Kentlands Children’s Chorus, KidServe and Cub Scout Pack 221 sponsored by the Foundation. Young families had the all-consuming Kentlands Kingfish, along with the myriad of youth sports programs and other activities offered by the City of Gaithersburg and Montgomery County. And Foundation programs like the Kentlands Film Society, the Kentlands Bridge Club and the Village at Kentlands and Lakelands—originally incubated as a Foundation program—were geared toward older residents. But there was a growing cohort of adults with older children and newly empty-nesters who didn’t have much to bring them together.
The Kentlands Wine Club has now entered its eighth year with a constantly growing dues-paying membership of more than 90. Under Steve and Lynn’s leadership the club continues to deliver on its mission to provide educational wine experiences for the novice and enthusiast alike, while fostering meaningful connections among neighbors. Over the years we have explored wines from around the world, with themed tastings highlighting both grape varietals and regions of the world such as Burgundy, Southern Italy, and South Africa just to name a few. We have welcomed numerous guest experts from the wine industry, including Rachel Loew Lipman, a fifth-generation winemaker at Loew Vineyards and former Kentlands resident. Along with our educational themes we’ve also had some fun; holding our annual March Madness of Wine, participating in ‘Open That Bottle Night;’ and exploring Wine Cocktails and ‘Wines to Take to the Beach.’
And, most importantly and as was envisioned by the Longleys back in 2018, the Club is giving back to the community. We raised $830 for a local nonprofit providing transitional housing and services to families in need in our first charity wine pull in 2024. And our goal is to raise even more this month for Nourish Now—a local nonprofit founded by a Kentlands resident to solve two major social issues simultaneously: food waste and hunger. And we hope to make our charity wine pull an annual event from here on out.
As Steve and Lynn move on to their next chapter, out of the Kentlands and out state, they leave a lasting legacy as Friends of the Foundation. And they also leave behind loving neighbors who will sorely miss them.

Program: Musica Viva Kentlands
Activity
Judi is a dependable and generous volunteer who consistently supports Musica Viva Kentlands in whatever way is needed. She helps at both our annual outdoor orchestra concert and our spring fundraiser events, assisting with check-in, distributing programs, ushering guests, and helping with setup and cleanup. Judi attends meetings, responds quickly when help is requested, and always approaches her work with a positive attitude. She also helps promote concerts in the community by distributing flyers and encouraging attendance.Judi is proactive and thoughtful in finding ways to contribute. In advance of our upcoming concert, she volunteered to place a lawn signs around the community, including along a well-traveled walking path that would have been difficult for others to access due to limited parking. Just this week, the day before the concert, she again reached out on her own to offer to collect the lawn signs after the event and return them, demonstrating her attentiveness to the many small details that help the program run smoothly.
In 2025, Judi also took the initiative to contact local senior living communities to invite residents to attend the concert or participate via livestream. This outreach required significant time and persistence, and Judi approached it with patience and a positive spirit.

Program: Gaithersburg Artist Collective (GAC)
Activity
Tim has been a member of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective since 2018, quietly and consistently solving problems and completing tasks—both large and small—for many years. His roles include supporting the Finance Team by managing weekly cash matters, as well as serving on the Facilities Team.
Tim is a woodturner who creates one-of-a-kind bowls and lathe-turned pieces, primarily using locally sourced, recycled wood. The patience, persistence, adaptability, and resourcefulness required for his craft are the same qualities that make him an invaluable asset to the Collective.
The Facilities Team is responsible for maintaining the physical gallery space, and throughout multiple gallery relocations, Tim has been a constant presence during the physically demanding work of packing, storing, and moving. He has also contributed extensively to repairs, painting, and upgrades. Over the years, he has devoted countless hours to projects such as building walls, repairing floors, creating displays, and constructing or modifying furniture.
Need
None of our gallery activities could take place without a safe, clean, and functional space, and Tim has always been a key part of making that possible. Every change, update, or improvement to our space comes with the pressure to be completed quickly so we can reopen and continue serving our community.
Beyond the planned days filled with paint, drywall mud, and sawdust, Tim has proven to be an invaluable troubleshooter when unexpected challenges arise. Issues like snowstorms and water leaks rarely happen during business hours, and Tim has graciously stepped in at inconvenient times to help manage and resolve them on multiple occasions.
Impact
Tim has provided quiet, steady support and stability to the Collective over many years. Whether planned or unexpected, the toughest tasks are consistently completed—and completed well—with Tim on the team.

Program: Kentlands | Lakelands 5K
Activity
For many consecutive years, Karen Craney has faithfully led our packet pickup shifts for the 5K. This includes hours of volunteer time, organization, and leadership of other volunteers.
She has also recruited many other volunteers through the years for the race through her running network.
Once she completes her volunteer shifts, she is also a faithful 5K runner!
Need
What would we do without Karen? She runs the packet pick-up shifts year after year without fail. We know we can count on her. The 5K simply cannot work without our volunteers, and Karen has been critical.
Impact
Karen's support and dedication has allowed the 5K to run smoothly and grow over the past several years. Because of her steadfast support, leadership, and help, we have been able to rest easy knowing she will be there. We are so grateful to Karen!

Program: Gaithersburg Artist Collective (GAC)
Activity
Gail has been an enthusiastic and active member of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective for the past three years. She has taken on a wide range of roles and responsibilities with energy and positivity, with her most significant contribution being her work as Education Manager. This role has been especially impactful as the organization has grown and found its footing over the past year.
After a 44-year career in teaching, Gail redirected her focus and is now an accomplished, award-winning artist. She works across a variety of media, including acrylics, alcohol ink, gelatin printing, needle and wet felting, collage, and mixed media. She has seamlessly combined her extensive teaching experience with her artistic practice in support of her role as Education Manager.
To date, Gail has collaborated with 26 instructors to bring classes to the gallery and has also generously shared her own expertise by teaching a variety of classes in multiple mediums.
Need
The Education Manager is responsible for planning and coordinating our year round schedule of classes, workshops, demonstrations and artist talks. This role includes instructor recruitment, scheduling, facilitating hands-on logistics, conveying marketing materials, and an endless amount of details to juggle in an effort to bring a variety of learning experiences to our gallery and the community.
Impact
The Gaithersburg Artist Collective has recently completed its first full year in our leased space. One of the main reasons we’re so grateful for this stability is the ability to plan and host regular activities, such as classes.
Gail has played a critical role in our growth and sustainability. Hosting classes brings energy and activity into the gallery, supports our operations, engages existing patrons in new ways, and attracts new visitors. It also allows us to share our enthusiasm for creating art with the broader community.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Gail leading this effort with such experience, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm.

What’s Next
With a strong foundation in place and meaningful progress achieved in 2025, the Kentlands Community Foundation looks ahead with a continued commitment to strengthening its programs, deepening community connections, and expanding access to all.
In the year ahead, the Foundation will focus on the following priorities:
Expanding Spanish-language content across the website to improve accessibility and better serve our broader community.
Continuing to grow and enhance community engagement activities, creating more opportunities for residents and visitors to connect through arts, culture, and shared experiences.
Strengthening program leadership and coordination to ensure consistency, sustainability, and continued growth across all initiatives.
Implementing a more comprehensive communications strategy to improve outreach, increase visibility, and better connect with our audiences.
Increasing utilization and awareness of our programs while clearly differentiating the Foundation’s role and impact within the broader Kentlands community.
These efforts reflect our commitment to building on the momentum of the past year while ensuring that the Foundation continues to evolve in ways that are thoughtful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the community.
Financial Overview
The Foundation’s funding comes from a combination of reliable long-term support and dynamic, community-driven revenue sources. These include an initial endowment from the Kentlands Citizens Assembly (KCA), funding from public and private grantmakers, individual and corporate sponsorships, and income generated by our programs and fundraising efforts.
The KCA remains the Foundation’s most consistent and foundational partner, with funds raised from every home sale in Kentlands earmarked—by covenant—for “the funding of programs determined to be beneficial to the qualities of the social and cultural life in Kentlands,” including specific reference to contributions to the Kentlands Community Foundation. Each year, the Foundation submits an annual request to the KCA to support staffing, as well as new and ongoing programs that enhance the cultural, artistic, and civic fabric of the neighborhood.
As part of its philanthropic mission, the Foundation donated $25,500 in proceeds from the 2025 Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Race to seven local nonprofit beneficiaries—demonstrating the direct impact of community participation and event sponsorship.

Conclusion
The Kentlands Community Foundation reflects on 2025 with a strong sense of progress, stability, and renewed momentum. With a growing community of supporters and a clear strategic direction, the Foundation continues to advance its mission while building a strong foundation for future growth.
This year marked several important milestones. The launch of a new, fully accessible website has strengthened how we connect with our community, ensuring that our programs and events are easier to find and accessible to all. We also saw the continued growth of our programs, including the first full year of Artists on Market in its permanent location, creating a lasting home for artists and a vibrant space for community engagement.
Our efforts to improve communication have also played a key role in expanding our reach. The introduction of a monthly newsletter has allowed us to better connect with residents, supporters, and partners across Kentlands, Lakelands, Gaithersburg, and Montgomery County, helping to share our work and deepen engagement.
In 2025, our programs welcomed more than 14,500 attendees, supported over 150 artists, and were made possible by the dedication of more than 250 volunteers. These achievements reflect the strength of a community that continues to show up, participate, and invest in the Foundation’s mission.
We are deeply grateful to the individuals, organizations, and institutions who make this work possible. In particular, we thank our major supporters whose partnership sustains our mission and fuels our future:
Kentlands Citizens Assembly
Lakelands Community Association
The City of Gaithersburg
Maryland State Arts Council
Paul M. Angell Family Foundation
Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County
Montgomery County
Together, we are creating a more connected, welcoming, and creatively enriched community.
Thank you for being a part of it.
