Miles at 100: Celebrating a Century of Influence

Musica Viva: Jazz Edition returns to the Lakelands Clubhouse on April 18 with Miles at 100: Miles Davis and his Musical Heirs, a centennial tribute to jazz legend Miles Davis featuring The UpBeets.

The program honors 100 years since Miles Davis’ birth and explores his profound influence on generations of musicians. In 1926, the year Davis was born, the United States was in the midst of cultural transformation. Jazz was emerging from New Orleans and spreading north to Chicago and New York. Radio was reshaping how Americans heard music. A new sound called jazz was taking hold and beginning to define the sound of American music.

One hundred years later, jazz remains one of America’s most enduring and influential art forms. In this performance, The UpBeets guide the audience through that lineage. Short introductions before each selection will offer insight into the artists and songs on the program, highlighting how Davis influenced generations of musicians who followed him. From his early bebop years to his pioneering work in cool jazz, modal jazz, and fusion, Miles Davis consistently reshaped the sound of modern music.

The UpBeets — featuring Tom Anderson (saxophones and flute), Ed Gallagher (guitar), Elie Canetti (keyboards), Scott Norcross (bass), and Raice McLeod (drums) — bring both technical mastery and storytelling to the stage. Their performances combine musical precision with thoughtful commentary, bringing jazz history to life.

Guests are invited to arrive at 7:00 p.m. for a champagne and chocolate reception, with the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Lakelands Clubhouse. Tickets are $45 and available at kentlands.org/musica-viva.

Miles Davis did more than shape his own era. He sparked ideas that generations of musicians would carry forward and expand upon. Miles at 100 brings that musical lineage to life, connecting his innovations to the artists who followed. In a year when the United States marks 250 years since its founding, the evening reflects on a distinctly American art form and one of the most transformative musicians of the past century.

Under the leadership of The UpBeets, audiences can expect an evening that honors jazz history and bridges a century of influence with a sound that remains as bold and inventive as ever.

Join us on April 18 for a night of music as we celebrate Miles at 100.

Proceeds from this performance help sustain the organization’s annual free outdoor classical concert, scheduled for September 19, 2026 on the Kentlands Clubhouse lawn.

Early purchase is recommended, as seating is limited. Processing fees are non refundable.

Musica Viva is a not-for-profit, donor-supported program of the Kentlands Community Foundation with the mission of bringing high-quality live music to the community.
